How to Design Your Koi Pond
If you plan to build yourself a Koi pond, think of it as a large project. It is not a very complicated project, but it does have many details. Like any major project, design and plan ahead, so that you can create the perfect Koi pond. Before you start digging, work out the finer details to save money and effort.
Shape of Koi pond
Choose the shape of your Koi pond based on existing constraints. Consider things like the ground slope, existing landscape, space, trees etc. Check the Koi pond design from all possible angles. The angles should include views from upstairs and inside the house too. It is best to lay out several possible Koi pond shapes, using ropes and other similar things.
Rectangular or oblong Koi ponds are the best. Koi ponds that have such shapes are simpler to clean and can support several drains. In case of these Koi pond shapes, the water circulation is also very good.
Depth of Koi pond
Koi fish can grow from 3 to 6 inches in a year! Thus, they need a lot of room to swim around in the Koi pond. Though the minimum depth of your Koi must be 4 feet, it is good to have 6 to 8 feet deep ponds. A deep Koi pond gives room for the existing Koi fish, allows you to add more fish with time and helps stabilize the water temperature.
Size of Koi pond
Larger the Koi pond, greater is the number of Koi fish it can hold. But there are some limitations that you need to keep in mind, while planning your Koi pond. Your Koi must be no smaller than 6 feet by 9 feet, and 4 feet in depth. Such a Koi pond can hold about 1600 gallons of water. Remember, about 6 inches at the top of the Koi pond won’t hold any water.
Keep the Koi pond simple
A complicated design may look very sophisticated, but cleaning it will become a massive problem. Keep the Koi pond design simple and elegant. A simple Koi allows better water flow and filtration. You can also monitor your Koi fish better in a simple pond.
Location of Koi pond
While designing your Koi pond, remember to choose a good location. You can choose it as a central/focal point in your garden or backyard. Choose a location that allows you to view it from your porch or bedroom.
Too much sunlight is ideal for algae growth, and too much shade from trees will create cleaning problems. Also, the roots of trees can pierce the walls of your Koi pond and lead to leakage! Keep your Koi away from plants that need insecticides. Protect your pond from heavy rains, by providing proper shade.
Keep these tips in mind to create a Koi pond that is elegant, and not too difficult to maintain.
