Koi Fish Habitat Essentials 101
To keep your Koi fish healthy, you need to provide them with a clean and healthy Koi pond. If you don’t clean your Koi pond regularly, the fish waste and pond debris will start decaying. What this means is that you will have to clean up a smelly and dirty pond!
If you want to save yourself the trouble, start taking care of your Koi fish habitat from the very first day.
Use Biological filters
Biological filters are meant to filter organic matter. Such filters make use of anaerobic bacteria-laden filter media to break down toxins into less harmful by-products. As Koi fish produce a lot of waste, use these filters to help them live longer.
Bio-filter size
Bio-filter size is directly proportional to the number of Koi fish per gallon of water. If your Koi pond is small and has only few Koi fish, you don’t really need a bio-filter. But if your Koi fish start overpopulating the pond, many will die due to lack of food. This would cause an imbalance in the nitrogen cycle due to the excessive nitrates from the Koi fish waste. pH of the water will increase leading to the growth of too much algae. This can choke off all the remaining Koi fish too! So if your pond has many Koi fish, get a sufficiently large bio-filter.
Ideal number of Koi fish
There are several mathematical formulas that can tell you the ideal number of Koi fish you should have in your pond. You can calculate the ideal number of Koi fish per gallon, per cubic feet, per square surface foot and so on. Irrespective of the calculations, if you can maintain a healthy Koi pond using mechanical and chemical options, you can have more Koi fish per gallon.
Don’t overcrowd the Koi pond
Just like us, Koi fish too struggle to survive in a habitat that is overpopulated. Imagine that you are living in a house with 50 people and have sufficient space, good food, water and clean air. You would still feel happy, provided that you are not stressed out.
Koi fish are like humans in this respect and don‘t like living in an overcrowded, stressful environment. If you find fish trying to jump out, it shows that there is something wrong with the water or that the pond is overcrowded.
Take care of the Koi Fish habitat, and your fish will live a healthy life for years to come.
